The  subject of general criminal law is the principles and theories valid for all kind of crimes like the definition of the crime concept  with its material elements (corpus delicti) and moral elements (mens rea), the general principles dominating the criminal law, definition of the concept of punishment, causes of crime, circumstances which allow exemption from punishment and extenuating circumstances,

The subject of special criminal law is the acts defined as crimes according to the laws of the country, their scope and limits, their aspects that differ from each other and the punishments prescribed for these crimes
